Between 1991 and 1997, the vagrant Guy Georges tortured, raped and murdered seven women in the area around the Bastille in Paris. Georges would ingratiate himself with his intended victim, gained an invitation to their homes, where he would torture and rape them and slit their throats. Georges’ DNA had been on file for three years before he was arrested. He had been questioned about three rapes and murders that had been committed between 1991 and 1994. When he came to trial in March 2001, he was described as a narcissistic psychopath, but initially denied the charges. On 5 April he confessed and was sentenced to life imprisonment with no parole for at least 22 years.
